Bravo!

I’ve been slacking this month. I need to get back into the groove.

well done. It looks like that was on some trail. I’ve always wondered if the energy output & calories count is higher with the greater resistance being off road. I wish Strava would separate road and mountain biking

Yeah it was. I recently got back into mountain biking after we moved to a river valley

I always find the dichotomy of Strava challenges interesting. You got the ones that are super easy. And then you’ve got the ones that are seriously challenging.

I remember some song about walking a hundred miles and then doing it again...

... should be easy to do it again and again on a bicycle!!

Speaking of which, nailed 50km today as part of my split knee recovery. Is so good!

I find trail riding is often easier, for the simple reason that asphalt bores the pants off me.

As far as calories/energy burn, if my understanding is correct (basing this off my heart rate), you definitely burn more on the trail than on the road unless you’re taking it really easy. But if you’re going for weight control it’s probably better to go easy on the trails or stick to asphalt, because keeping your heart rate lower means your body is able to use fat for fuel. If you’re flogging it on trails and have your heart rate pegged all the time, you’re basically just burning glucose... pretty much just running off whatever’s in your stomach. An hour of that and I’m completely wiped. Not “tired” wiped, not even feeling hungry, but feeling like I want to throw up and having literally no strength.

For example, the two pics below are the same location - not the exact same trails but the same terrain. First is trying to keep up with someone who knows what they’re doing and knows the trails. Second is chilling a bit more and taking breaks between trails. First one left me lying on the grass for 10 minutes before I felt like I could get up without throwing up. Second I was hungry but nothing else.

road biking is boring as hell, its also probably more dangerous as there are a lot of idiots driving while on facebook.

Ride 100, 500, or 1000 miles in the month of July. I'll get a bronze medal for completing the 100

Yeah you don't really run the risk of getting plowed into by a f250 on singletrack trails. However I have watched someone get nailed by a frightened deer lol
